Montreal, October 6, 2023 – Printemps numérique is pleased to announce the complete official programming for the MTL connect: Montreal Digital Week exhibition and the COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE artistic program. From October 10 to 13, 2023, local and international artists and researchers will explore the power of numbers, community organization, and how to connect humanely in the digital age.

— EXHIBITION: COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE —

Collective Intelligence is an artistic program that explores the concept of shared/group intelligence emerging from collaboration and the confluence of talents, ideas, and individual experiences.
Often used in sociobiology and various humanities departments, collective intelligence proves to be a compelling theme for this year’s global artistic programming; the selected works are the result of exchange and possess a driving force in numbers. They exist within the new paradigm generated by the intersections of infographics and real-time data, spatial audio, and extended realities, enabling new explorations of immersive and collective experiences. They highlight the relationship between the personal and the virtual, while examining the potential societal transformations that could result from rapid technological advancements and the digitization of our reality.

As part of the overall programming of MTL connect 2023, Erandy Vergara, MTL connect’s Artistic Director, will present a panel with local researcher/artist Sofian Audry on their recent publication, “Art in the Age of Machine Learning,” on October 11 at NAD, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, kicking off the following workshops and experiences, which will also take place at NAD:
Exploring and leveraging transdisciplinary interactions between arts and sciences

Inspire Workshops #1 – Room N5-206 (NAD)
The workshop will focus on the connections between the worlds of art and design, and those of science and research. Raoul Sommeillier will develop the underlying concepts of these transdisciplinary interactions and their possible implications, drawing on current research in artscience, the results of his Wernaers Grant (F.N.R.S.) specialization project in scientific communication and outreach, and illustrating them through various Ohme projects.
Ohme is a Brussels-based organization that explores and investigates these interactions between arts and sciences, thereby contributing to the development of new conceptions of interdisciplinarity, with a keen interest in co-creation, knowledge sharing, research, and breaking down barriers between disciplines, mindsets, and audiences. This involves developing new forms of scientific mediation, artistic creation, and innovation through collaborative and transdisciplinary practices. The workshop’s goal will be to start from the participants’ interests and skills to outline together the foundations of a creative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary artscience project. It will involve examining the reflective and methodological aspects as well as anticipating the potential benefits of the transdisciplinary interactions involved and necessary for the project’s development.

MTL connect Studio (NAD)
In collaboration with the Regroupement québécois de la danse (RQD), CTRL:N immerses the audience in an interactive co-creation of contemporary flamenco. Accompanied by a musician and a digital artist, the dancer draws inspiration from the audience’s imagination and unique ideas. Armed with their phones, everyone is invited to participate by sending texts that are projected on screen in real time. What will the answers be to: What in current events moves you? Who is affected? How can we put this into motion? Thus, this trio of artists engages in a creative and digital dialogue with you.
VR DANCE PERFORMANCE by La Fougue/The Fury

In collaboration with the Regroupement québécois de la danse (RQD), La Fougue/The Fury presents three distinct and evocative choreographic signatures, Margie Gillis, Hélène Blackburn, and Andrea Peña, in this immersive virtual reality experience.
Imagine having the opportunity to find yourself at the center of the stage, fully immersed with the performers. Thanks to the magic of a virtual reality headset, this is now possible. Through a 40-minute experience at the heart of three excerpts from emblematic pieces from their repertoires, specially adapted for the occasion.
— INTERNATIONAL DELEGATION TOUR —
ACROSS THE CITY OF MONTREAL, October 11–12
MTL connect is pleased to welcome an international delegation of curators and programmers from New York, Los Angeles, Milan, and Brussels and has organized a tour across the city of artist centers, research institutions, galleries, and studios that place digital arts at the forefront.
Over two days, the delegation will visit the Plateau, Mile End, downtown, and Rosemont, and stop at the following key spaces: GIV (Groupe Intervention Vidéo), an artist center founded in 1970 dedicated to promoting video works by women; OBORO, an artist center that supports the development of artistic practices based on visual and media arts at the local, national, and international levels; daphne, a non-profit Indigenous artist center committed to meeting the needs of emerging, mid-career, and established Indigenous artists; Elektra, a gallery that presents and promotes works created at the intersection of contemporary art and new technologies; TOPO, a self-managed artist center whose mission is to assist and equip artists in their exploration of contemporary digital artistic practices; Hexagram, an interdisciplinary inter-university network dedicated to research-creation on the relationships between arts, cultures, and technologies; The Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture & Technology, a research-creation institute at the intersection of fine arts, digital culture, and information technologies; and World Creation Studio, a non-profit organization that aims to strengthen local creative communities by providing accessible studios, creative mentorship, skill development workshops, exhibition opportunities, as well as resources and tools for digital media.
The tour will include lunches and conclude with a 5 à 7 during MTL connect; by invitation only.
