At the crossroads of creativity, digital culture and AI

This year again, Printemps numérique wishes to highlight the cultural and creative industries (CCI) at MTL connect through the Culture & Creativity theme of its professional programming. Join us for this 5th anniversary edition from October 10 to 13, 2023 at the NAD School in Montreal and online.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the transition to digital, forcing the entertainment industry to reinvent itself. At the same time, the dematerialization of cultural content on digital platforms revolutionized distribution and access to culture. How can we reinvent ourselves in this context? How can we make better use of data culture? What new business models can ensure the sustainability of cultural and creative industries?

Moreover, with the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, what will be the place of creators and creative industries in a world where AI can generate works and content? How can digital technology enrich culture and heritage?

DISCOVER THE PROGRAM

The varied programming of this edition promises to offer inspiring analyses brought by CCI experts. Here is an overview of the activities not to be missed:

Workshop on engagement in VR experiences versus in-person shows by Marion Cossin

The COVID-19 pandemic propelled immersive technologies, such as virtual reality, opening new artistic and economic opportunities for virtual and hybrid shows. However, we still do not know what impact these new formats have on audience engagement. Marion Cossin (CRITAC) and her team conducted studies to assess the impact of different types of shows on audience attention and emotions, comparing in-person and virtual performances. Come discover the results of this research, which sheds light on the spectator experience and helps companies adapt to the digital age.

Workshop on AI in the service of creative and cultural industries by Joana Neto Costa, Camille Bertin, Jonas Isenegger, Anne-Laure Mathieu and Gaëlle Ramboanasolo

How can we reconcile ethics and data to serve your development? This workshop, given by collaborators from La Piscine and Gradiant AI, aims to promote responsible use of data and AI in creative and cultural industries. It will offer a unique opportunity to bring together both AI experts and creative industry players to reflect together on this issue.

MTL Inspire on how to invest and develop in the metaverse by Philippe Nadeau

Metaverses are interconnected digital worlds where communities gather, exchanging cryptocurrencies, NFTs and virtual goods. These opportunities offer monetization means for businesses and users. Philippe Nadeau (DigiHub Shawinigan) will explain their operation, use and potential challenges.

Experience sharing on the development of a France-Quebec MOOC on discoverability with Viêt Cao, Élisabeth Madgin, Andrés Cuéllar, Matthieu Richy-Dureteste and Nadia Seraiocco

How can collaboration between governments, businesses and organizations provide more equitable access to culture and digital creativity? What will be the place of creators and creative industries in a world where works and content can now be generated by AI? In what ways can digital technology further enhance culture and heritage? Travel back in time through James Duncan’s remarkable watercolours. A true chronicler of his time, the artist documents Montreal’s evolution over the five decades he was active there, from 1830 to 1880. Brought together for the first time, a hundred of his works offer a unique dive into the city of the 19th century. As an epilogue, the digital work by Iregular studio reinterprets Duncan’s works in the form of synthetic images generated by artificial intelligence, proposing a recomposed universe and dreamlike landscapes of a Montreal that no longer exists.
