Biographie
Cheryl Sim is Managing Director and Curator of the PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art, in addition to being a media artist and researcher. She began her professional life at Studio D of the National Film Board of Canada, which led her to video art and to involvement in the self-managed artist-run centre community. As an artist, she creates video works and installations, presented in North America and Europe, that consistently address questions of identity construction, women’s work, and power relations. Her work as Managing Director and Curator at the PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art is deeply informed by the ethos of self-managed artist-run centres and by the learnings drawn from the interstices. Among her recent exhibitions are UNION by Lee Bae and RELATIONS: Diaspora and Painting. She holds a PhD in Art Studies and Practices from UQAM, which allowed her to explore ethnic clothing and its importance in diasporic identity. Her book Wearing the Cheongsam: Dress and Culture in a Chinese Diaspora was published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2019.
