Biographie
Anne Whitelaw took on the role of Executive Vice-President, Academic at Concordia in July 2021, after serving in an interim capacity since July 2019. As the head of academic affairs and university operations, she provides leadership and vision to foster the development of innovative teaching and learning methods. She also oversees the academic planning process and ensures the maintenance of a high-quality learning environment.
She previously held the positions of Interim Executive Vice-President and Associate Executive Vice-President, Planning and Positioning. In these roles, she established a comprehensive strategy to support student success, led the development and implementation of an integrated enrolment management plan, and supervised student services and enrolment management. As Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Fine Arts, she contributed to the development of graduate programs and enhanced the profile of the faculty’s research and artistic achievements, while making significant contributions to the university’s strategic planning.
Anne Whitelaw joined Concordia’s Department of Art History as an associate professor in January 2011, after spending 11 years as a faculty member in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta.
Provost Whitelaw has served on various departmental, faculty, and university committees at the University of Alberta and Concordia, and was President of the Universities Art Association of Canada. She was also a member of the Expert Panel on the State of Science and Technology and Industrial Research and Development in Canada for the Council of Canadian Academies.
She is a member of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire (BCI), where she chairs the Joint Working Group on Sexual Violence. She also sits on the Conseil franco-québécois de coopération universitaire as well as on the boards of Metropolis Bleu and Vanier College.
Anne Whitelaw holds a PhD in Communication from Concordia University, an MA in Art History from the University of Essex, and a BA from Concordia in the same field. Her research focuses on the intersection of art historiography and Canadian cultural institutions, with a particular emphasis on exhibition practices and museum display. Her book Spaces and Places for Art: Making Art Institutions in Western Canada 1912-1990 was published by McGill-Queen’s University Press in 2017.
