Presented at the McCord Stewart Museum as part of the exhibition Montréal en devenir – Duncan, peintre du 19e siècle.
James Duncan’s urban landscapes shaped the representation of the city of Montréal in the 19th century. What would the world look like through the eyes of someone whose only reality was modelled after an artist’s illustrations? This is the question the digital art studio Iregular answered by submitting Duncan’s works from the McCord Stewart Museum’s collection to artificial intelligence.
Using this data and a generative program, the studio designed a three-dimensional virtual representation of a synthetic image universe composed of topographic layers and superimposed reliefs. The result is a unique, constantly renewed experience, creating evolving imaginary landscapes derived from Duncan’s work.
