A new prototyping and mediation space dedicated to the performing arts and technological creation has opened in Montreal!
The 7 Fingers have set up their technological laboratory, LAB7, a toolbox of technologies in a fantastic playground, to propel local creators towards new creative horizons.
The 7 Fingers’ creation centre offers over 60,000 square feet of creative spaces in the heart of the city, just steps from Place des Arts. Within these spaces, LAB7 is equipped with cutting-edge motion capture, projection, immersive environments, and 3D creation software.
Over the past year, LAB7 has hosted several residency projects, exploring motion capture, interactive environments, and stage projection. The flexibility of the space has allowed it to accommodate projects ranging from immersive exhibitions for a science centre to hybrid performances, including augmented reality acts and even the creation of an NFT collection by a collective of artists.
These residencies have fueled several applied research projects, conducted in partnership with CRITAC (Centre de recherche, d’innovation et de transfert en arts du cirque): using artificial intelligence to reduce the need for markers in motion capture, analyzing audience reactions and emotions in hybrid experiences, etc. LAB7 also introduces students to these new tools, in collaboration with the École nationale de cirque, the National Theatre School of Canada, the SAT, and multimedia creation schools. Finally, it serves as a prime showcase for suppliers, equipment manufacturers, or software creators.

Also, mark your calendars for November 17 and 18 for the LAB7 Forum, the first event dedicated to professionals in the performing arts and technological creation. This will be an opportunity for experience sharing, demonstrations, and discussions to imagine and build a shared future for these two creative sectors.
