Montréal, May 4, 2022 – The Printemps numérique is very pleased to announce that the 4th edition of MTL connect: Montreal’s Digital Week will feature an exhibition and artistic program titled ECOSYSTEMS OF HOPE. From October 15 to 23, 2022, our activities are part of the Culture and Creativity theme programming.
An ecosystem [a community of living organisms in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment, interacting as a system] is generated by the presence of compounds developed at the heart of a dense network of interdependencies and exchanges of energy, information, and matter, enabling the development and sustenance of life. This system, which promotes and develops life and its potential, operates in contingency with all living and non-living beings that are part of it, making each element dependent on all the others, all intertwined and interwoven. For us, this is a source of hope, proving that we draw our own strength from the existing connections between each of us, as well as from a deep need for community.
Thus, it is connections that sustain life and catalyze hope. This foundational way of thinking is more important than ever today, in the face of the pandemic and ongoing conflicts. With Ecosystems of Hope, Printemps numérique invites artists and academics to reflect on our planet, the technologies we develop, climate responsibility, and equity. With this gathering of artistic and academic communities—both generated and generative—Printemps numérique raises the following questions:
In what ways do contemporary artists and thinkers address urgent issues such as climate change? What is the inherent difference between the work of an artist and a scientist or technology developer? What imaginaries do they invite us to inhabit through their work? What are the hopes of contemporary artists?
Ecosystems of Hope will feature Canadian and international artists exploring the ecological present, as well as the creative imaginaries of the future. The artistic program will focus on two main themes: climate responsibility and equity. Some works will explore these issues through imagination, while others will do so by inviting us to take action. They will also question what hope means to them, individually and collectively; the differences between “I” and “the others.” For the curatorial approach, the guiding idea is to evoke the sense of the infinitely large and the infinitely small, to challenge the anthropocentric idea that humans are the measure (and the center) of the Universe.
